about

Crisp, warm, exquisite organic chamber electronics is the order of the day here from Cathode. This new double-A side 7” for Distraction Records couples the beautiful asceticism of glitches and clicks with dodo-simple melodies, two doses of luminous electronic pop goodness to keep you company as the nights draw in.

Cathode is Steve Jefferis from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Cathode’s album, “Special Measures”, is out on Expanding Records, adding to his scrapbook of previous outings for tasteful independent electronica imprints including Static Caravan, 555 and Awkward Silence. Logo Magazine said "carefully-coiled clicks and cuts are flooded under percussion that even R2D2 would struggle to accurately compute, where the key is always in the melody and those luscious rolling rhythms", and John Peel declared him "first class".

“Chronophobia” is Cathode’s first work with vocals: a collaboration with Caroline Thorp, who previously lent her sumptuous voice to Newcastle St. Etienne stylists, Fun With Light.

“Economic Growth”, meanwhile, builds from sinewave minimalism to feedback chaos in the space of four minutes. This work is taken from the soundtrack to Richard Fenwick's experimental short film, “RND#04: Economic Growth”, commissioned for the AV festival 2003.
